AIMS:
This one day programme aims to examine positive approaches to epilepsy by promoting awareness of the condition, its symptoms and responses to individuals living with epilepsy. Risk assessment and risk management strategies are considered to enable staff to support service users to access ordinary life activities and community facilities.

OBJECTIVES:
This will be achieved by:

  • What is epilepsy and what causes it?
  • The classification of seizures, analysing the symptoms;
  • Possible triggers;
  • First aid advice for supporting people whilst having a seizure;
  • Using risk assessment to manage activities and enable service users to develop greater skills;
  • Dynamic risk assessment – managing situations when the unexpected happens;
  • Decision making and evaluating acceptable versus unacceptable risk;

OUTCOMES:
By the end of the session, participants will have gained an understanding of epilepsy and the ways in which seizures present plus the value of positive risk taking and will have seen how effective risk assessment contributes to empowering and creative practice.
