AIMS:
This half day workshop aims to help workers explore some of the issues presented by ageing for people with learning disability.

OBJECTIVES:
In a relaxed and informal atmosphere this will be achieved by:

  • The life span and stages of ageing;
  • Learning disabilities and ageing - consideration of the links between Alzheimer's Disease and Down's Syndrome;
  • Working with people living with dementia type illnesses and ageing - some of the challenges;
  • Supporting older people whose behaviour challenges in learning disability services;
  • Communicating with older people with learning disability;

OUTCOME:
By the end of the session, workers will have gained an understanding of the ageing process and the lifespan needs of people with learning disabilities. They will have gained insight into the links with Alzheimer's disease and will have considered strategies for supporting older service users.
