AIMS:
This programme aims to help staff to develop techniques in using low arousal approaches to managing aggressive incidents in care settings. It explores the function and origin of aggressive behaviours and the role of the worker or the context in causing stress for both service users and staff.

OBJECTIVES:
This will be achieved by:

• Examining theoretical explanations for the emergence of aggressive behaviours and why care settings may add an element of tension for service users.
• Considering staff attitudes to service users who cause them stress and aggravation in the workplace: why this may happen and how workers can become aware of their feelings towards service users.
• Examining how worker behaviour may contribute towards aggressive incidents i.e. because of caregiver demands, expectations and pressure.
• Exploring the contribution of cognitive impairment to the incidents of aggression.
• Considering low arousal approaches: the evidence base for their effectiveness and how such techniques can be developed.
• Devising diversion and collusion strategies to de-escalate situations.

OUTCOMES:
By the end of the session, workers will have had the opportunity to examine the way in which they interact with service users within the care setting in order to identify low arousal approaches for diffusing aggressive incidents.
