AIMS:
This one day programme aims to enable participants to explore and understand advocacy, its relationship to empowerment and its role in service provision. This includes consideration of the skills for advocacy to promote its effectiveness.

This will be achieved by:

  • Defining advocacy and defining empowerment;
  • Exploring the relationship between advocacy and empowerment and their ideological underpinnings;
  • An examination of the basic principles of advocacy;
  • Levels of advocacy – choice and the development of communication;
  • Consideration of the barriers to advocacy and empowerment;

OUTCOMES:
By the end of the session, participants will have an understanding of the principles of advocacy and empowerment. They will be aware of their role as workers in the promotion of advocacy and empowerment and will be able to identify the barriers to their existence.
