AIMS:
This one day programme aims to examine the increased likelihood that people with a learning disability will also be living with mental health problems.

The course intends to enable workers to become more aware of the bio-psycho-social causes of mental health in order to support the people with whom they work.

OBJECTIVES:
This will be achieved via a variety of teaching methods including lecture, group work, discussion and case study material and the following aspects will be considered:

  • Exploration of what we mean by mental health and mental illness;
  • An overview of biological, psychological and social causes and explanations of mental illness;
  • The increased vulnerability factors experienced by people with learning disabilities;
  • Positive practice for working with people who may have mental health problems and a learning disability;
  • Strategies for intervention and multi-agency support;

OUTCOMES:
By the end of the programme, learners will have gained an insight and awareness of mental health and mental illness with specific regard to people with learning disabilities.
